Questions from drivers
What does the CRA ask for?
The CRA asks for a logbook with the date, destination, purpose and distance of each business trip, plus your odometer at the start and end of the year. Beenlog records the first four as you drive and asks you for the odometer readings.
I'm self-employed in Canada. What do I claim?
Your actual vehicle costs times your business-use share. Beenlog's logbook gives you that share. The CRA per-kilometre rate is for allowances an employer pays, and Beenlog shows it only when you say that's how you claim.
Does the IRS log work for the standard mileage rate?
Yes. It's a contemporaneous log, and it works out the deduction at each category's standard rate for the part of the year you drove it.
Is commuting business driving?
No. Driving between home and your regular workplace is commuting, in both countries. Beenlog keeps those drives as Commute so they never land in your claim.
